At
its inception DEAF Media served first as the producer of
the Emmy Awardwinning series Silent
Perspectives (KCSM-PBS), the nation’s first
television series of, by, and for the Deaf community.
Over the years, though most of DEAF Media’s
activities have been designed as San Francisco Bay Area
or California statewide projects,
Chuck Baird
many—including
the Emmy-winning
PBS series Rainbow’s
End and the video series American
Culture: The Deaf Perspective—have achieved
national impact and gained widespread recognition.
Other
DEAF Media projects, such as Celebration:
Deaf Artists and Performers, the Deaf
Education and Arts Network (DEAN), and DEAF
Media at the Oakland Museum, have become models
for Deaf communities and cultural institutions in other
states to follow.
DEAF Media continues to innovate with projects
such as DEAF Media Docents,
providing meaningful access through Deaf-led excursions
to San Francisco Bay Area cultural institutions. After
thirty-three years, DEAF Media continues to be a leader
in the field of Deaf-centered programming, Deaf arts, education,
and advocacy.
